L. and T. N. received Commonwealth of Massachusetts Middle Level Educators' Student Scholar Awards. The above examples coupled with a high level of involvement and success in extracurricular and co-curricular activities continue to be a source of great pride for the whole community. Facility Improvements As we move forward and address the critical facility needs identified in Abington's Master Plan for School Facilities, minor renovations to our school buildings remained an important focus of 2005 summer activity. Facility improvements include the following projects. At the Center School, an additional parking lot has been constructed, the building has been connected to the municipal sewer system and new classroom countertops have been installed. At the ECC, the Library/Conference Room area has been renovated and extensive renovations to the electrical system have been completed and white boards have been installed in many classrooms. At the North School, the underground oil storage tank has been replaced. At the Woodsdale School, roofing and masonry repairs have been completed. At the Frolio School, the installation of whiteboards in all classrooms in nearing completion and new shelving in the Library/Media Room has been installed. At the High School, the fire protection system has been upgraded and a new Tech Ed classroom has been established. On the technology front, I am happy to report that after years of hard work all classrooms and offices throughout our school district are now wired for internet access, and system-wide the infrastructure is being installed to establish direct wire and wireless data connections among all our school buildings. The "Millennium 2000 Project" ($1.2 million) was completed in 2005. As the result of private fundraising and the hard work of the Athletic Boosters and many Abington citizens, our students and the community-at-large have access to an all-weather track, weight and fitness rooms, utility building and a band stand. Closing Comments I wish to acknowledge with deep gratitude the continued good work of school groups such as PTOs, the Greenwave Athletic Boosters and Music Parents' Association, the Abington Education Foundation, the Healthy Youth Initiative and other community service organizations, local businesses and other town departments for their many contributions to the public schools. I would like to express my appreciation to my administrative team, the PK-12 faculty and all support personnel for their assistance and dedicated service. They labor each day, sometimes under pressures and limitations, to meet the needs of their students. They have worked hard to implement the mandates of the Education Reform Act of 1993, No Child Left Behind and local initiatives. In closing I wish to publicly thank the present members of the Abington School Committee for their continued support, and I look forward to working with the Committee as we attempt to address the many important and sometimes difficult challenges facing public education. Respectfully submitted, John J. Aherne, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools |
