REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS (continued)

 Student Achievement and Activities

Once again, through the dedicated efforts of our very capable staff of
teachers, administrators and support personnel, our students continue to
be successful as exemplified by the following educational indicators:

-
Post Secondary Education and Placements - Higher education placement
for the Class of 2005 found approximately 83% of the graduates furthering
their education with 52% going on to four year colleges and 31% to two year
colleges or technical schools. Sixteen percent (16%) of the graduates
planned to go directly to work and 1 % planned to enter the military.

-
Student Accomplishments - Several students received prestigious
academic awards and scholarships from national, regional, state and local
organizations. C. M. received a Rensselaer Medal for Excellence in Science
and Mathematics and C. M. (also)  earned the Bausch and Lomb Excellence
in Science Award. J. B. was awarded the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award.
Scholastic Art Awards were given to A. A., M. C., M. D., E. D., R. F., J. H., E.P.
and B. Y.  J. C., N. C. and M. C. all earned awards at the South Shore Regional
Science Fair. The Grace L. Arnold Award for Academic and Athletic
Performance was awarded to L. McS. and M. J. was the recipient of the W.
Percy Arnold Award. Thirty-seven students were awarded the John and
Abigail Adams Scholarship, which provides a tuition waiver for four years of
undergraduate education at Massachusetts state colleges and universities.
The Adams Scholarship is based on outstanding performance on MCAS.

-
National Honor Society - Sixteen Abington High School students were
inducted into the Abington Chapter of the National Honor Society in
December 2005.

-
Abington High School - The Abington High School Destination Imagination
Team won state recognition in 2005 and competed at the national level. The
High School Football Team was the Division 3 Super Bowl Champions; the
Girls' High School Softball Team won the South Shore League Championship
and the High School Cheerleaders won the Winter Competition.

-
Frolio Junior High School - Mi. L. and T. N. received Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Middle Level Educators' Student Scholar Awards.

The above examples coupled with a high level of involvement and success
in extracurricular and co-curricular activities continue to be a source of
great pride for the whole community.

                                   Facility Improvements

As we move forward and address the critical facility needs identified in
Abington's Master Plan for School Facilities, minor renovations to our school
buildings remained an important focus of 2005 summer activity. Facility
improvements include the following projects. At the Center School, an
additional parking lot has been constructed, the building has been
connected to the municipal sewer system and new classroom countertops
have been installed. At the ECC, the Library/Conference Room area has
been renovated and extensive renovations to the electrical system have
been completed and white boards have been installed in many classrooms.
At the North School, the underground oil storage tank has been replaced. At
the Woodsdale School, roofing and masonry repairs have been completed.
At the Frolio School, the installation of whiteboards in all classrooms in
nearing completion and new shelving in the Library/Media Room has been
installed. At the High School, the fire protection system has been upgraded
and a new Tech Ed classroom has been established. On the technology
front, I am happy to report that after years of hard work all classrooms and
offices throughout our school district are now wired for internet access, and
system-wide the infrastructure is being installed to establish direct wire and
wireless data connections among all our school buildings.

The "
Millennium 2000 Project" ($1.2 million) was completed in 2005. As the
result of private fundraising and the hard work of the Athletic Boosters and
many Abington citizens, our students and the community-at-large have
access to an all-weather track, weight and fitness rooms, utility building and
a band stand.

Closing Comments

I wish to acknowledge with deep gratitude the continued good work of
school groups such as PTOs, the Greenwave Athletic Boosters and Music
Parents' Association, the Abington Education Foundation, the Healthy Youth
Initiative and other community service organizations, local businesses and
other town departments for their many contributions to the public schools.
I would like to express my appreciation to my administrative team, the PK-12
faculty and all support personnel for their assistance and dedicated service.
They labor each day, sometimes under pressures and limitations, to meet
the needs of their students. They have worked hard to implement the
mandates of the Education Reform Act of 1993, No Child Left Behind and
local initiatives.

In closing I wish to publicly thank the present members of the Abington
School Committee for their continued support, and I look forward to working
with the Committee as we attempt to address the many important and
sometimes difficult challenges facing public education.

                                                                     Respectfully submitted,

                                                                     John J. Aherne, Ed.D.
