FIELD IMPROVEMENTS — While it still may not qualify as anyone's
field of dreams, Memorial Field has undergone recent improvements
that should make it a desirable place to play. Uneven and worn out,
the baseball field has long been criticized by parents, players, and
coaches as unsafe. But last week, volunteers put the finishing
touches on a renovation project that included the addition of 12,000
yards of screened loam. "We put the loam down and hydroseeded,"
said Shawn Reilly of the Memorial Field Improvement Committee.
"We took out the old cinder track that used to run through the field,
replacing it with grass. It looks great." Donations in the form of
money, material, and labor kept the $50,000 project from being
charged to taxpayers. "We took care of this project ourselves by
raising more than $20,000," said Reilly. "We also received a lot of
help from residents like Glenn LaPointe and Christopher Kane,
both of whom donated labor and materials." He said
the field should be usable by next April. "It's now in
great shape," he said.        — Robert Carroll
